How to change a tap washer

Changing a tap washer is a very easy and simple process. All you will need in tool ways is an adjustable shifter and pair of plies.

1) Turn water off

Make sure that you turn the water off to the house or building and drain the water out of the line. Quick little tip here is that if you are only going to replace  tap washer on hot tap. Head out to the hot water service and turn the water tap off to it. That will stop all water going through the hot side.If you do that don’t open the cold tap tho.

2) Open tap

Open the leaking tap that you are changing the tap washer on.  This does two things. One is that it drains out any excess water before you remove the spindle and two it takes the tension off the washer making it easier to undo the spindle body.

3) Remove old and in with the new

Sweet now for the fun part. Once all the water has drained out of the tap using the adjustable spanner remove the button. That is the nut on top of a standard handle and then lift the handle off. Remove the cover flange which will be screwed on to the main body of the taps. Set aside now take the spanner. On the bottom of the spindle there is a nut looking shape  see here loosen that off and unscrew it all way out from tap housing or basin breach. Change tap washer then replace back into housing. Tighten up the spindle and screw the flange back on. Put the handle back on and close the tap so can turn the water on.

With the shower taps or laundry taps there much the same. Remember that this for standard tapware sets. Once all the water has drained out of the tap using the adjustable spanner remove the button. That is the nut on top of a standard handle and then remove the handle off.  Now depending on what type tapware you have there could be a spring behind the handle or could like the basin and screwed onto the tap. You will feel it once taken the nut off if there is a spring. Its not a high tension going to shoot across the room spring. Remove the cover flange which will may have a spring behind the flange that keeps tension on the tap handle. Set aside now take the spanner. On the bottom of the spindle  just where pokes through the wall there is a nut looking shape  see here loosen that off and unscrew it all way out from tap housing or basin breach. Change tap washer then replace back into housing. Tighten up the spindle and screw the flange back on. Put the handle back on and close the tap so you can turn the water back on. Once the water is on and tested clean up as you have finished replacing tap washers in the house.

Conclusion on how to change a tap washer

That is the simplest way for me on how to change a tap washer. The hardest part about it is removing the tap handle as there are quite a few different variations of tap handles and how they connect to the spindle. Some have nuts on top where others have a lift off cap where the nut and even screw at times sits. There is even tapware that has hex screw that holds it onto the spindle shaft. So working out which one you have is the hardest. Some times you may need to reseat the tap or service the taps as well.
