due. When i first arrived at the hot water heater i noticed all this water everywhere. On closer inspection i found that the hot water heater pressure relief valve leaking. Not good as this is wasting hot water and costing more money as paying to heat the water up and then let it waste onto the ground.

How to test hot water heater pressure relief valve leaking or not.

To see if your water heater valve leaking is a simple and easy job. Some times it’s not as easy as mine was by just looking at it. Mine was bad and who knows how long it was leaking for. As said above you should test this valve every 6 months and now i will just look there more often now to and cause its more a safety thing anyway. First locate where the relief valve is located on your hot water tank. It is always located high on the tank and very similar looking to the picture above. Once located there is either a lever on the back of the valve or a knob that turns. Either way they are both the same valve just different makers. Now test the valve a couple times by pulling on the lever that is located on the back of the valve or turn the knob and letting the water run through for bout 10 seconds then letting it slam shut. Water will escape out through the ptr valve and down the drain pipe. Be careful at this point as that is hot water so don’t burn your self.

Never ease the lever to close this can give you a false reading. Always let the moving parts move on there own steam. If you pull the lever down and and then let go of the lever and it stays open and water spays everywhere then its faulty.

Once you have completed the task above a few times and you are happy the ptr valve is working correctly wait few minutes after the last test. If by chance there is still water coming out of the drain pipe even if it is a dribble the valve could be faulty. Once you have closed that ptr valve there should be no water at all coming out of it. It just could be seized by mineral and corrosion build up but for what there worth just replace it. Remember that this ptr valve is a safety valve for you and your family you don’t want it to fail.

Now remember you are doing a simple physical maintenance test on the valve. They are made to work under high temperature and pressures and if the valve is leaking under your test conditions it will under the high temp and pressure of a heating hot water tank. For more info on that then have a look at pressure relief valve for hot waters.
